Designed traditionally for the secure storage of fine kimonos and textiles, this monumental clothing chest is constructed in two modular stacking sections. This classic multi-part engineering originally allowed for easy transport and domestic adaptability. Today, it offers the versatile option to be displayed as a single, striking highboy unit or placed side-by-side as two elegant low credenzas. The façade showcases the stunning, prominent grain of native Japanese timber, sealed under a rich, warm translucent lacquer that accentuates the wood's deep, organic undulations. The geometric presence of the chest is punctuated by a magnificent arrangement of hand-forged iron hardware. This includes large, circular full-moon lock plates (jōmae), heavy Warabite-style drawer pulls, and robust iron corner-braces (sumikanagu). The lower section features a charming small safe door (kobiraki-do), heavily clad in defensive ironwork, which opens to reveal hidden internal drawers for valuables. Fitted with its original heavy iron side-carrying handles (sao-toshi), this tansu beautifully bridges utilitarian historical engineering with the timeless elegance of modern minimalist and eclectic interiors.
