Rendered in the wonderfully playful visual language associated with Tanzania’s Tingatinga painting tradition, the composition features saturated red, blue, yellow and black pigments with exaggerated animal forms and a strong graphic quality. The painting is signed by the artist at lower right and bears a handwritten inscription on the reverse referencing “Tingatinga” and “Tanzania.”

The Tingatinga movement originated in Dar es Salaam in the late 1960s with Tanzanian artist Edward Saidi Tingatinga (1932–1972). His distinctive brightly colored animal paintings inspired generations of East African artists, developing into a recognizable Tanzanian school of painting that continues today. Early works were famously produced using enamel paints on inexpensive boards, with African wildlife becoming one of the movement’s defining subjects.

Presented in its existing dark frame under glass. The reverse retains its original fabric backing and handwritten inscription.

A colorful and highly decorative example of East African folk and modernist painting, particularly appealing for collectors of African art, folk art and animal imagery. See less
