Emerson was born in Boston in 1803 and educated at Harvard University. He was a minister, lecturer, essayist, philosopher, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement in the mid-19th century, and was a champion of individualism and critical thinking. His essays were based on his lectures, with the First Series of Essays published in 1841, and the Second Series of Essays being published in 1844.
