A wonderfully expressive vintage Balinese monkey wall mask, hand carved in wood and finished by hand in warm natural tones with black, red and gold accents.
Produced in Bali, Indonesia, this decorative mask draws from traditional Balinese Barong and mask imagery. Deep carving gives the face remarkable dimension, from the exaggerated eyes and projecting muzzle to the pointed ears and open mouth.
Large openings at either ear originally held separate carved wooden pendant ornaments commonly found on masks of this type; both ornaments are now absent. The openings themselves are intentional elements of the original carving.
The aged painted surface retains attractive variation and patina, giving the piece considerably more character than a newly produced decorative mask.
An impactful piece of Indonesian folk art for a collected gallery wall, study or globally inspired interior.
