A striking pair of 1940s French painted toleware table lamps, retaining their wonderfully unusual original-style painted metal shades and perforated metal diffusers.
Constructed entirely in metal, the lamps have a beautifully layered architectural form finished in warm terracotta orange and deep olive green. Classical architectural scenes and finely detailed ornamental friezes encircle the bodies, lending the pair the romantic character of French Neoclassical, Empire and Directoire design.
The broad green tole shades give the lamps an especially dramatic silhouette, while their tall, slender finials and stacked architectural bases create a wonderful sense of proportion. The aged painted surfaces have mellowed beautifully, giving the pair the kind of patina and depth that feels collected rather than decorative.
