Two dramatically abstracted figures emerge from the heavily textured concrete surface, their overlapping faces, angular limbs and expressive gestures giving the composition a distinctly Cubist sensibility. The rhythmic figuration has a compelling Picasso-esque energy while remaining characteristic of Prata’s personal sculptural vocabulary.

Prata has worked in concrete since the late 1970s, formulating his own mixture of sand, aggregate and cement. Inspired by music and improvisation, his sculptural compositions are developed intuitively through rhythmic lines, symbols and abstracted figures.

Presented in a wide neutral mat with a slim black frame, the relief has the presence of an architectural fragment or modernist bas-relief. A particularly strong statement piece for a modern, Brutalist, Postmodern or thoughtfully collected interior.
