A monumental antique salt-glazed stoneware jug or flagon dating to the 19th century. This substantial hand-thrown vessel features a warm amber-brown glazed upper body transitioning into a lighter taupe-gray lower section. Its generous ovoid form is completed by a short cylindrical mouth and a large applied loop handle.
Natural glaze runs, surface variations, throwing lines, kiln marks and firing irregularities give the jug wonderful depth and character. A distinctive firing mark on the shoulder provides further evidence of its handmade origins.
Originally made as a utilitarian vessel for storing or transporting liquids such as cider, spirits, beer or vinegar, this exceptionally large jug now makes a striking decorative accent. It would also make an impressive custom table lamp. The jug has not been drilled or altered, allowing the buyer to select the preferred method of professional lamp conversion.
No maker’s mark was found. Its precise country of origin cannot be confirmed, although its form and construction are consistent with 19th-century American or English utilitarian stoneware.
