A monumental antique salt-glazed stoneware jug or flagon, dating to the 19th century and most likely of English origin. This substantial hand\-thrown vessel features a rich, variegated brown glaze, rounded shoulders, a small circular mouth and a heavy applied loop handle.
Beautiful evidence of its handmade construction includes visible throwing lines, natural glaze runs, firing variations and the potter’s finger impressions beneath the handle. Originally created as a utilitarian vessel for storing or transporting liquids such as spirits, cider, beer or vinegar, it now makes a striking decorative object with wonderful scale and character.
The jug would also make an exceptional custom table lamp. It has not been drilled or altered, allowing the buyer to determine the preferred method of professional lamp conversion.
No maker’s mark was found. The precise country of origin cannot be confirmed, but its form, construction and brown salt-glazed finish are consistent with 19th-century English utilitarian stoneware.
