The horse features a warm ochre painted finish, deeply carved dark mane, inset eyes, painted bridle and tack, and an exceptionally detailed hand-painted floral saddle in rich shades of red, orange, cream, green and black. A dark hair tail and the sculptural raised front leg add wonderful character.

The construction is particularly interesting. The horse stands on a shaped wooden platform fitted with four aged metal wheels. The wheeled platform rests within a separate curved wooden rocker frame with turned wooden crossbars.

The piece retains a wonderful aged surface and has not been refinished or cosmetically restored. There is expected wear throughout, including rubbing and loss to the painted finish, scratches, small age-related cracks, oxidation to the metal wheels, and wear to the wooden platform and rocker. These imperfections are consistent with the age and history of the piece and contribute to its character.

No maker’s mark or manufacturer’s label has been located. Based on its construction and decorative style, the piece is consistent with early-to-mid-20th-century European-style rocking horses; however, its exact date and country of origin are unknown.
