Emotional Topography (No. 2) is an original abstract landscape by Diane Grant, part of her “Emotional Topography” series, in which landscape becomes a vehicle for exploring movement, memory, perception, and emotional states.
The painting presents a highly tactile interpretation of a turbulent body of water. The upper portion is deliberately restrained and atmospheric, composed of softly layered whites and pale grays with subtle horizontal gestures that suggest an expansive, overcast sky and distant horizon. A faint, almost architectural form emerges within this atmospheric field, adding a sense of ambiguity and depth.
In contrast, the lower half is intensely physical and dynamic. Dense passages of black, charcoal, silver-gray, and white oil are built into successive horizontal layers, creating the visual sensation of waves in continuous motion. The paint is manipulated through dragging, scraping, and expressive gestural application, producing ridges, undulations, and areas of pronounced impasto. The resulting surface resembles both the changing surface of the sea and a geological terrain shaped by natural forces.
The monochromatic palette heightens the emotional character of the work. Deep blacks introduce weight and tension, while the luminous whites and grays create moments of light and openness. The contrast between the quiet upper field and the turbulent lower section establishes a compelling dialogue between stillness and movement, distance and immediacy.
Rather than offering a literal depiction of a particular place, Grant transforms the landscape into an emotional terrain—a space where the physical experience of water, horizon, and atmosphere becomes an expression of inner perception.
The sophisticated monochromatic palette and strong vertical format make this original work particularly suitable for contemporary, minimalist, modern, coastal, industrial, and refined neutral interiors.
