A wonderful vintage French horse competition plaque awarded at a Concours des Haras in the Sarthe region of France. The cast metal plaque features a vivid red ground with raised gilt lettering and decorative detailing around the border.
The inscription reads “Concours des Haras, Sarthe, Trait Percheron, Poulinières Non Suitées, 1er Prix,” indicating that it was awarded as First Prize in a competition for Percheron draft horse broodmares shown without foals.
The reverse retains its wonderfully utilitarian character and bears the handwritten name “Triger,” the prize-winning horse. The contrast between the decorative front and hand-marked reverse gives the piece particular charm and authenticity.
An unusual piece of French equestrian history that would be especially appealing in a collection of horse memorabilia, French country décor, sporting antiques, or vintage agricultural awards.
