This is an impressive vintage Chinese/Tibetan bronze sculpture of Maitreya (The Future Buddha), also known as Tsangpa (现巴佛). The figure is seated in a meditative posture, hands held in the Dharmachakra Mudra (Wheel-turning gesture).
The statue features an ornate, flame-shaped halo behind the head, an elaborate crown, and delicate jeweled ornaments. Flanking the shoulders are intricately sculpted vines that rise to support lotus buds and small emblems. The flowing ribbons and drapery of the robes are cast with great fluidity.
The surface is covered in a thick, aged patina with significant remnants of gold gilding (Nianjin) and traces of old paint, giving it a rich, temple-weathered appearance. Weighing over 3 lbs and standing nearly 12 inches tall, this is a substantial piece of Buddhist art, perfect for an altar, a display shelf, or as a museum-quality accent in a sophisticated home.
