"The Fortune Teller" - Excellent original Flemish/Dutch oil on canvas, 18th c.. This depicts a young couple listening attentively to the fortune teller as she reads the Tarot cards. The young man has his hand lovingly around her neck, so it would appear that they are hoping to hear good things about their future together. This is a wonderful acquisition that should be treasured, and passed down to the next generation. This is one of the paintings that I have hung in my private office. I truly enjoy it.
Country of Origin: Flanders, Belgium (Flemish/Dutch).
Media: Oil paint on canvas laid on canvas.
Size: 8 1/2 inches tall by 10 inches wide; framed 12 1/2 inches tall by 14 inches wide.
Labels: Two Christies labels. Also a small Sadow label.
Condition: This work is of excellent quality. Condition does not detract the quality or appearance of the work. Black light shows over professional overpaint on 5% of the canvas. A vertical line 3 inches long and 1/4 inch above the fortune teller's chair. Small dabs to background over an old layer of varnish. This layer of varnish was likely added when the painting was originally cleaned and laid down on board. Black light reveals possible restoration to canvas in the area of the hands of the female seated at right. Restoration is excellent, and was done in a manner so as not to impact the quality of the overall work.
Circa: 18th Century.
