Theodore Cornelius de Groot (December 15, 1920 – July 20, 2019) was a Dutch-American painter. He was born in a suburb of The Hague in the Netherlands. In 1959 de Groot came to America with his wife Hans and five children. He started painting for the advertising industry before going on his own.
He said “I refuse to paint "sure sellers", such as the cute, the corny, the romantic, the sentimental, the narrative. My favorite subject is the contemporary American urban scene, which I find exciting and uniquely suited to my taste. I like to use clues that give an illusion of space, or only a suggestion of it around the corner or beyond the hill. The opposites of mass and space, of volumes and voids intrigue me.”
He truly shows this sentiment in this and every piece he has created.
This was believed to have been created in the 1970’s or early 80’s. It has some imperfections that are consistent with age.
The panel measures approximately. 48"H x 17"W.
This piece was recently purchased from a Hollywood prop department and they mentioned it was rented to the production of "George and Mandy's First Marriage" in 2024. See less
