A striking vintage mid-century Murano glass bird sculpture, attributed to Dino Martens for Aureliano Toso, Italy, circa 1950s.
Hand-blown in clear glass with tightly controlled black and white filigrana cane work, the sculpture is distinguished by its dramatically elongated, curving silhouette and vivid applied red glass beak and eyes. The alternating linear decoration follows the sweeping contours of the body, creating a wonderful sense of movement and optical depth.
The form and distinctive black-and-white filigrana treatment closely relate to documented bird designs created by Martens for Aureliano Toso during the 1950s. Comparable period examples are described as filigrana semplice and mezza filigrana.
An elegant and highly sculptural example of postwar Italian art glass, with a particularly graphic presence from every angle.
