The highly stylized form exemplifies Londi’s distinctly sculptural approach to ceramics, with an exaggerated rounded body, elongated neck and beautifully restrained silhouette. Its richly variegated earthen glaze is worked with deeply textured, hand-incised decoration, creating a surface with remarkable depth and movement.

Raised upon slender iron legs and its original black iron plinth, the work has an architectural presence that elevates it beyond the traditional ceramic figure. The combination of primitive abstraction, expressive surface treatment and elegant proportions is quintessential of Londi’s experimental work for Bitossi during the height of Italian modernism.

A particularly rare and highly collectible example of 20th-century Italian ceramic design. Bitossi’s archives confirm Londi’s use of bird forms mounted on black iron bases, while period examples of Londi birds with metal bases are documented from the 1960s.
