Description:
Presenting a magnificent and highly collectible vintage Chinese wooden pillow, masterfully carved from a solid block of aged Boxwood (Huangyangmu). This piece features a rich, glowing amber-brown patina with beautiful natural wood grain, indicating years of handling and care.
The pillow is exquisitely decorated with deep high-relief carving. The two ends feature elaborate, fierce lion (or mythical beast) masks with bulging eyes, curling brows, and open mouths. The central surface is carved with swirling vine motifs, bordered by classic Chinese "Greek Key" (meander) patterns. The central panel is embellished with several round, vibrant green semi-precious stone cabochons (likely jade or malachite).
A distinctive feature is the row of small ventilation holes arranged on the top surface. These allow for airflow, and the pillow features a hidden sliding compartment, making it a beautifully functional object (often used as a traditional pulse pillow for Chinese medicine, or as an aromatic box).
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The wood is solid and structurally sound. The natural boxwood patina and grain are beautifully displayed. Minor surface wear, small scratches, and slight age-related darkening are visible, consistent with age and use. All inlaid stones are present and securely set. No major cracks or structural damage.
