The property began as a collection of rustic cottages envisioned by Nantucket socialite Elizabeth T. Ludwig, who dreamed of creating a gracious harborside hotel. Locals reportedly nicknamed the ambitious project “Mrs. Ludwig’s white elephant,” and the name endured. Over the decades, the property expanded and evolved into one of Nantucket’s best-known waterfront hotels.
