This atmospheric oil painting by belgian artist ferdinand jorwitz (1897–1979) draws us into a narrow old street, where tall façades lean companionably towards one another and a small neighbourhood greengrocer brings a welcome splash of everyday life. Two ladies tend their leafy wares while, further down the lane, a pool of soft light seems to promise another little corner waiting to be discovered.
jorwitz had a fondness for the quieter faces of belgium, painting landscapes, flowers, still lifes and city scenes in a palette of warm, muted tones. Here, his loose and gently dreamlike brushwork gives the scene a beautiful sense of stillness. One can almost hear the low murmur of conversation and the rustle of paper bags. There is something wonderfully cinematic about the composition: deep shadows, softly glowing façades and a bright opening at the end of the street, as though brussels has briefly opened a secret side door. It is a small glimpse of ordinary city life, made quietly magical through paint.
signed f. Jorwitz, the painting is presented behind glass in its handsome mid-century frame, dating from around the 1950s or 1960s. A charming little window into old brussels, full of atmosphere, gentle colour and the irresistible feeling that there may be something lovely just around the corner.
condition: the painting itself is very well preserved, protected over the years by its original glass. The frame displays some age-related wear, nothing serious. There is a small chip to the top of the frame, see picture, but it is discreet and not visible once the piece is hung. Overall, the condition is good for its age.
