Originally self-published by Whitman is 1855, its popularity allowed Whitman to publish eleven more editions between 1856 and 1891. There were also two posthumously published editions by the executors of his estate in 1897 and 1902. Then in 1926 Doubleday published an edition in conjunction with Page & Company. This is a copy from Doubleday’s 1940 illustrated edition published with Doran & Company, Inc. The illustrations are by Lewis C. Daniel. The original 1855 edition did not contain illustrations.. Instead of conventional rhyme schemes and structured meter, Whitman used a free verse form to celebrate the themes of nature, the human body and democracy. This would be an impressive addition to any home library. See less
