Thai temple rubbings are a traditional cultural practice rooted in the Ramakien, Thailand’s national epic based on the Indian Ramayana. For centuries, devotees of Rama would visit temples—especially Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) in Bangkok—during pilgrimage and rub charcoal or colored chalk over the stone carvings to take home as souvenirs. These rubbings captured scenes from the Ramakien, such as Rama, Sita, Ravana, and other mythic figures, and became a way to keep a piece of the sacred journey.
Before the printing press, this method was the primary way to preserve and share the visual storytelling of the Ramakien. The carvings themselves were part of temple decoration, often covering hundreds of meters of walls, and were central to Thai Buddhist art and identity.
