The cross stands 12.5” tall x 4.75” across, and is a perfect example of this unique type of folk art, from the raised diamonds to the layered scalloped edges. It features a silver-plated metal Christ as well as the INRI symbol … Latin initials for “Jesus Christ, King of Jews”, the charge written by Pontius Pilate and placed on the cross above Jesus during his crucifixion. The small metal skull on the bottom is an arma christi symbol representing Adam's skull, as Christian tradition holds that Jesus was crucified over the burial site of Adam. But more importantly, the skull represents the fall of humanity through Adam which is redeemed directly above by the sacrifice and blood of Jesus Christ. Pieces from the tramp art period (1870's-1940’s) are sought after by collectors and are becoming more and more hard to find. See less
