Expressive vintage Korean carved wood mask depicting Yangban, the aristocrat or nobleman character associated with Korea’s traditional Hahoe mask dance.
The mask features deeply carved smiling eyes, dramatic dark brows, a prominent dimensional nose and warm variegated wood tones. Particularly interesting is its traditional two-piece construction: the lower jaw is separately carved and articulated, attached to the upper mask with braided brown cotton cord. The same cord is used throughout the piece for the side ties and hanging loop.
The hollowed reverse, open eyes and articulated construction reflect the form of a wearable theatrical mask, while its strong sculptural presence makes it especially appealing as wall art.
The wood retains attractive variations in tone and finish that emphasize the depth of the carving.
