Artist's Statement:
My mixed media work first involves envisioning a meaningful place.
I bring together my interest in fabric and pattern, paper and paint. As I begin to incorporate these elements into my "landscape", a dream-like image emerges as the essence of this meaningful place: a playground with swings, a backyard, a quiet forest or garden. Light is a focus and how it can generate certain moods. I use the interplay of light and subject to evoke not only the feeling of calm solitude, but of spiritual yearning.
My work begins with creating textures on canvas with modeling paste,
paint, and acrylic mediums. When applying subsequent layers I will simultaneously draw, brush on and create washes with paint.
Patterns are either added by stamping or by simply painting them.
Translucent mediums are added in layers to create depth. This process is continued until I achieve the relationship I want between light, subject, texture and pattern. See less
