Opening its doors in 1873, Villa d'Este is one of the world's most celebrated grand hotels. Once a 16th-century royal residence, the hotel overlooks the shores of Lake Como and has welcomed generations of royalty, statesmen, artists, and Hollywood icons. Notable guests have included Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, and many others. The hotel also played a role in cinema history when Alfred Hitchcock filmed scenes for his first feature film, The Pleasure Garden, there in 1925.
