Three seat sofa designed by Verner Panton and manufactured by Fritz Hansen in Denmark 1973. This exceptional piece is part of Verner Panton’s celebrated 123 system, a modular furniture concept that allowed customers to compose seating arrangements according to their own needs. Within this visionary series, Panton explored the idea of a continuous sculptural line translated into multiple typologies, from lounge chairs and dining chairs to bar stools and sofas. All variations share the same distinctive S shaped profile, a pedestal base and the possibility to combine or separate elements using a clever system of connecting brackets. As a result, each configuration in the 123 family has the fluidity and coherence of one uninterrupted design language. This three seat sofa is a superb example of the system at its most architectural, created by linking three high back lounge elements into one unified composition. The original sand colored quilted upholstery is preserved beautifully across all sections, showing only minimal signs of use while retaining its soft, textured relief. The foam remains supportive and comfortable, offering an enveloping seating experience across the entire width of the sofa. As with the lounge chairs, the bases are finished in brown painted aluminum, a tone that perfectly echoes the palette of early 1970s interiors, where earthy neutrals and warm materials prevailed. The sofa includes armrests on the outer seats, a feature not commonly found in surviving examples from the series.
Because the 123 system was modular, clients could customize almost every detail, height, backrest, arm configuration, upholstery type and fabric, making fully original combinations like this especially desirable. The way the three elements align gives the piece a rhythmic, almost sculptural quality, yet it remains exceptionally comfortable and suitable even for taller users thanks to the generous height and ergonomic shaping. with its striking silhouette, outstanding original condition and strong presence, this 123 sofa stands as one of the finest and rarest manifestations of Panton’s modular vision. A perfect companion to the matching pair of lounge chairs, it represents an extraordinary opportunity for collectors seeking an authentic and complete ensemble from one of Denmark’s most influential designers.
