The 1938 Midwick-Old Westbury-Los Indios Polo Series refers to a high-profile series of winter polo matches played in early March 1938 at the prestigious Midwick Country Club in Alhambra, California.
The series brought together three of the era's most powerhouse polo organizations from across the Americas to compete on the Southern California circuit. The March 1938 Matches
During the coastal tournament, the elite Old Westbury team traveled from Long Island, New York, to the West Coast to challenge California's dominant Midwick squad and Argentina’s legendary Los Indios club.
Key Matchup: On March 6, 1938, Old Westbury continued its dominant streak on the Pacific coast by defeating Los Indios 13 to 8 at Midwick. The Powerhouse Teams
The three clubs featured some of the greatest 10-goal handicap icons and historical figures in polo history:
Old Westbury (New York): Led by Cornelius Vanderbilt "Sonny" Whitney and featuring the famous 10-goal cowboy Cecil Smith, they were the reigning U.S. Open Champions at the time. They later successfully defended their title in September 1938 at Meadow Brook.
Los Indios (Argentina): Founded in 1923, this legendary Argentine team traveled north to compete in the U.S. circuit. Later in 1938, Los Indios returned home to win the prestigious Argentine Open Polo Championship.Midwick (California): One of the primary epicenters for West Coast polo, Midwick frequently hosted international and cross-country challenges on its world-class fields
