Named after French Renaissance general and statesman Louis II de La Trémoille, the hotel became a noted haunt for artists, celebrities, and musicians. Jazz legends Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong were among its famous guests and are said to have played impromptu music from the hotel’s balconies.
