An extraordinary mid-century Balinese modernist sculpture depicting a stylized, statuesque maiden by the highly celebrated female master carver, A.A. Fatimah. Executed in a striking Art Deco aesthetic, this exquisite figure showcases the dramatic structural elongation, fluid contours, and stylized geometric refinement that defined the peak mid-20th-century Balinese art movement.
Carved from a premium, dense block of heavy Macassar ebony wood, the sculpture displays an exceptionally rich, warm chestnut-to-chocolate timber coloration with a dense, fine-grained surface. The figure is posed in an elegant, serpentine arch, with one arm gracefully trailing down her side while the other wraps behind her head to clasp her tall, intricately bound traditional topknot hair configuration. The smooth, sweeping lines of her elongated torso transition effortlessly into the crisp, architectural pleats of her sarong, showcasing a brilliant interplay of minimalist forms and fine detailing.
The underside of the base features the clean, hand-incised signature reading "A.A. FATIMAH BALI", ensuring genuine vintage pedigree and direct artist attribution. Preserved in pristine gallery condition, the piece features an immaculate surface luster with absolutely no cracks, chips, or restorations.
