This atmospheric Canadian winter landscape depicts a partially frozen winding river bordered by snow-covered banks, evergreens, and slender birch trees beneath the warm light of a winter sunset. Stone uses strong color and expressive brushwork to capture the contrast between the cold snow-covered landscape and the warmer tones of the setting sun.

The painting is clearly signed **“TOM STONE”** in the lower left.

Thomas Albert Stone was born in Fownhope, Herefordshire, England, in 1894 and immigrated to Canada in 1914. He studied at the Ontario College of Art, where he received the Governor General’s Medal, and later continued his artistic studies in Paris. Stone became a longtime member of the **Ontario Society of Artists (OSA)** and is particularly known for his Canadian landscapes and snow scenes.

The Haliburton subject is especially appropriate to Stone’s body of work, which frequently explored the winter landscape of Ontario and other parts of Canada.

The painting is presented in a substantial vintage **ornate gilt gesso frame**. The frame retains an attractive aged appearance but has visible condition issues, including scattered chips, areas of gesso loss, and exposed wood along portions of the edges. These imperfections have been left as found rather than restored.

A strong example of Canadian landscape painting with excellent decorative presence, particularly suited to traditional, English country, lodge, rustic, collected, or layered interiors. See less
