Exceptional early Kardex industrial work table with extraordinary proportions, original painted surface, and a large integrated drawer. At 57 inches long and just under 24 inches high, the table has a striking low, horizontal profile, with a spare steel frame, substantial riveted construction, and remarkably clean geometry. The oversized drawer extends from one end while remaining almost completely integrated into the silhouette when closed.
The original dark gray-green factory finish is particularly good, with decades of oxidation, rubbing, scratches, and tonal variation creating a surface that would be impossible to reproduce convincingly. Nothing has been stripped or polished away. The result is an unusually strong piece of early American industrial design that feels equally at home as a low work table, display table, studio piece, or unconventional coffee table.
Manufactured by Kardex in Tonawanda, New York, likely during the late 1920s–1930s. The table retains its handsome original KARDEX / TONAWANDA, N.Y. metal plate as well as a surviving paper label identifying REMINGTON RAND INC. / RAND KARDEX BUREAU DIV. Kardex became part of Remington Rand in 1927, placing the table within the company's important early period of American industrial and office design.
A later City of Spokane property tag documents another chapter in its working history. Its ownership before entering City service remains unknown. Interestingly, other Remington Rand institutional equipment has surfaced locally, including a documented Hanford artifact acquired only a few miles away. Remington Rand was a major U.S. wartime contractor, and Kardex systems were widely used for industrial records and production control. An earlier government or industrial origin is therefore plausible, although no connection between this particular table and Hanford or any other specific facility has been established.
The combination of large scale, unusually low form, integrated drawer, untouched original finish, surviving manufacturer identification, and documented institutional use makes this an exceptional surviving example of early American industrial furniture.
