A wonderfully sculptural 19th-century English stable harness or bridle rack, constructed from weathered hardwood, likely oak.
The tall, narrow board is fitted with six substantial hand-shaped wooden hooks, each passing through the main upright and secured from the reverse using traditional timber wedges and retaining blocks. This entirely wooden construction gives the piece a particularly honest, primitive character and reflects its original working purpose within a stable, tack room or agricultural setting.
The timber has developed a beautifully dry, softly faded surface with pronounced grain, age splits, wear and tonal variation throughout. Large original fixing holes at either end would once have allowed the rack to be securely mounted.
Now highly decorative as well as practical, it works particularly well as wall-mounted storage for coats, hats, bags or textiles while retaining the character of an authentic piece of English vernacular furniture.
