this imposing oval fine earthenware ceremonial tray (monumental dimensions: 40.5 x 52.5 cm, depth 7.5 cm, and a weight of 3.7 kg) is an authentic masterpiece of the late-victorian english manufacturer w.t. Copeland & sons, historically known by the famous mark of excellence "copeland late spode." its attribution and precise dating are unequivocally certified on the back by a circular, embossed hallmark, a rhomboidal patent registration mark, and the institutional date code "l 89," certifying its precise manufacture in july 1889 at the historic stoke-on-trent workshops. Structurally, the piece is a refined serving dish for roasts or game (technically called a "meat platter"), featuring radial grooves in relief on the front that flow into a lateral drip pan, supported on the back by curved bridge-shaped feet. The curved brim with a finely scalloped rim is decorated with a refined, continuous polychrome floral garland, rich in small wild roses and small blue flowers, framing a large central bouquet dominated by a blooming dahlia and blue morning glory. The decoration was applied using the transferware technique, masterfully finished and hand-shaded down to the smallest anatomical details of the petals and foliage.

originally founded by josiah spode in 1770 in stoke-on-trent, the spode factory revolutionized the history of european applied arts by perfecting the formula for soft calcium phosphate porcelain (bone china) and the technique of copper-plate transfer printing. In 1833, management passed entirely into the hands of the wealthy family of bankers and merchants led by william taylor copeland, who retained the designation "late spode" (i.e., "ex spode") to emphasize continuity with the factory's legendary original quality. During the 19th century, under the name w.t. Copeland & sons, the factory achieved the highest international recognition, participating with enormous success in the great universal exhibitions, including the famous london great exhibition of 1851 and the paris exposition of 1889, the very year this tray was produced. Today, copeland's late 19th-century works are regarded as historic gems of the applied arts, displayed in world-class museum institutions such as the victoria and albert museum in london and the potteries museum & art gallery in staffordshire.
