An antique French floral oil painting on canvas depicting a view of a blooming garden, created by the painter Alexandre Guelle, signed and dated “A. Guelle. 1911.” in the lower left corner.
The vertically developed composition features a dense bush of white peonies with delicate pinkish undertones in the foreground, rendered with thick, rich impasto brushstrokes. The central section of the canvas displays a floral structure with garden roses in warm shades of pink and lilac. The background subtly suggests the continuation of the garden through vibrant green and yellow foliage under a soft, diffused light.
The pictorial technique stands out for its generous application of impasto, visible both in the flower petals and in the execution of the foliage. The artwork is preserved in its original carved wood frame with a luxury gilt finish and interlinked laurel leaf motifs. On the reverse, the canvas displays its original wooden stretcher with a central crossbar and corner keys.
Alexandre Guelle was a French painter, decorator, ornamentist, and interior designer active between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century.
Versatile in both applied and fine arts, he worked across the transition from late 19th-century taste to Art Nouveau and early 20th-century movements. He distinguished himself through the detailed study of natural elements — particularly floral, botanical, and faunal motifs — which he utilized for easel paintings as well as ornamental studies for architecture, wall decorations, and decorative arts. His pictorial production includes oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings characterized by a vivid chromatic sensitivity and a rich, tactile paint application. This piece has an attribution mark,
