An exceptionally rare and sculptural Swedish Art Deco footed centerpiece bowl, manufactured in Sweden during the 1940s by Stjärnmetall (originally … Read more An exceptionally rare and sculptural Swedish Art Deco footed centerpiece bowl, manufactured in Sweden during the 1940s by Stjärnmetall (originally Stjärnkvist Metall AB, later acquired by Nilsjohan). Cast in a heavy zinc alloy, this piece is finished in Stjärnmetall’s signature matte sage green and highlighted with rich gilded accents throughout. The shallow, wide bowl rests upon a tripartite architectural pedestal supported by three charmingly sculpted figural bear cubs, each accented with gold-painted paws, ears, and muzzles. The interior of the bowl features a finely fluted, reeded border framing a bas-relief medallion in gilt, depicting Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon surrounded by celestial stars. The piece comes complete with its custom handmade clear glass insert/liner, designed to protect the delicate painted surface during use. This bowl is attributed to the designer Gunnar Åkerlind who was known for his classic, empire-style designs.
