A wonderfully distinctive piece of British equestrian silver, this vintage sterling silver riding spur paperweight combines the heritage of one of England’s most celebrated luxury silversmiths with classic sporting style.
The miniature spur is fully hallmarked for London, 1974, and bears the silversmith’s mark of Garrard & Co. London, the historic firm long associated with the British Royal Family and renowned for its exceptional silver and jewelry. Crafted in solid sterling silver, the spur retains remnants of its original gold-gilt overlay, creating an attractive contrast of warm gold tones against the silver beneath and giving the piece wonderful vintage character.
Beautifully detailed, the spur features a traditional star-shaped rowel that actually spins, an especially charming feature that demonstrates the attention given to this miniature interpretation of a functional equestrian spur. The spur is mounted on a substantial polished green marble base, transforming it into an elegant and unusual gentleman’s desk paperweight.
Interestingly, the spur is removable from the marble base, allowing it to be examined and displayed independently. The sterling silver spur itself weighs approximately 22 grams and measures 3.5 inches wide, 1.5 inches deep, and 1 inch high. With its marble base, the complete paperweight measures approximately 5 inches wide, 3 inches deep, and 2.25 inches high, with an impressive total weight of 1 pound 4 ounces, giving it the substantial feel expected of a quality desk accessory. Good vintage condition, one very small corner chip to the marble base. One decorative end piece appears to missing from the end of the spur as one side has two. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
The combination of Garrard craftsmanship, London hallmarks, sterling silver, surviving gold gilt, equestrian subject matter, and substantial marble construction makes this an exceptionally handsome decorative object. It would be equally at home in an English country interior, gentleman’s study, library, executive office, or collection of fine equestrian and sporting antiques.
A sophisticated and conversation-worthy piece of 1970s British luxury, particularly appealing to collectors of Garrard, sterling silver, horse racing and equestrian memorabilia, or distinctive vintage desk accessories.
