This exceptional early 20th century Turkmen tribal area rug is a rare and highly collectible example of nomadic Central Asian weaving, distinguished by its extraordinarily uncommon pistachio green field. Natural green dyes were notoriously difficult to achieve and unstable in early weaving traditions, making their successful use both technically demanding and visually striking. As a result, rugs featuring true green fields—particularly of this softness and clarity—are seldom encountered.
The field is adorned with an all-over geometric composition of small-scale Turkmen Guls, the iconic octagonal motifs traditionally woven by nomadic Turkmen tribes throughout Northwest Persia and Central Asia. Arranged in three harmonious vertical columns, these repeated guls create a rhythmic and balanced pattern that is both graphic and timeless, offering strong visual structure without overwhelming a space.
Framing the luminous green field is a richly saturated dark red and rust-toned border, providing dramatic contrast and grounding the composition with warmth and depth. Handwoven from hand-spun wool and dyed entirely with natural pigments, this rug reflects the authenticity, artistry, and cultural heritage that define fine Turkmen tribal rugs.
