This exceptional Persian Tehran area rug, woven circa the early 1900s, features an exquisite allover paisley design on a rich red field framed by a deep blue border — a composition of quiet visual intensity and refinement. Unusually fine in weave and presented in a rare near-square format, this piece exemplifies the artistry of Tehran's master weavers working at the intersection of tribal decorative tradition and classical court carpet refinement. The irregular, organic forms of the paisley give the composition a sense of movement and individuality that makes this piece both highly decorative and genuinely unique.
Its compact near-square format and refined design make it equally well-suited as a wall tapestry, tabletop covering, or elegant floor accent — a versatility that speaks to the adaptability of the finest small-format Persian rugs. Tehran rugs, woven in the workshops of the Persian capital, represent some of the rarest and most refined carpets produced in Persia during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Unlike the great weaving centers of Tabriz, Isfahan, and Kashan — which produced rugs in considerable volume — the Tehran workshops operated on a small, exclusive scale, producing carpets for the court of the Qajar Dynasty and the grand households of the Persian aristocracy. Tehran rugs are distinguished by their extraordinarily fine weave, the exceptional quality of their wool and silk, and a design vocabulary of great classical refinement. Genuine 19th century Tehran rugs are extremely rare on the market and are actively sought by the most serious collectors of antique Persian carpets.
