Why are his figures nude? It is our most basic self, unadorned with things that have cultural or time specific references. As with his still life painting, the backgrounds to his figures are semi-abstract. Tobias Harrison wants to give a clue to the space, not describe it in detail, so as to concentrate on the subject. He only paints direct from life in a natural light. This gives the opportunity to keep taking a fresh look at the subject.
