It is our most basic self, unadorned with things that have cultural or time specific references. As with his still life painting, the backgrounds to his figures are semi-abstract. Tobias Harrison wants to give a clue to the space, not describe it in detail, so as to concentrate on the subject. He only paints direct from life in a natural light.
