The painting depicts Riomaggiore in the Cinque Terre region of Italy, rendered in a lively, expressive style with bold color, energetic brushwork, and the densely stacked architecture characteristic of the Ligurian coastal village.

The canvas is edged with simple, narrow strips of wood attached directly along the sides. These are not a conventional decorative picture frame, but rather a minimal wood surround that gives the painting a finished edge while retaining a casual studio character.

Wiseman was an accomplished American artist and educator whose work encompassed painting, drawing, textiles, sculpture, and artist books. She studied at the Art Students League in New York and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. Her work is represented in institutional and corporate collections, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

Wiseman frequently used the name “Ansayre,” including for her Ansayre Press, making the signature on this work consistent with her artistic identity.
