1910s-1920s; Anglo-American Oil Co. Ltd - London, UK
This double-sided porcelain antique advertising flange sign is for Royal Daylight Lamp Oil, the flagship product of the Anglo-American Oil Company, known for its high-quality kerosene and lamp oils. Yellow-stenciled block lettering rises sharply from a field of aged ochre enamel, giving strong dimensional presence to the words "Royal Daylight Lamp Oil." At center, a black-and-white litho insert depicts a horse-drawn oil wagon in service, grounding the piece in a bygone era of local delivery and pre-electric illumination. Flanking script proudly proclaims the brand as purveyors of the "Best American Lamp Oils."
The Anglo-American Oil Company was founded in 1888 as a British subsidiary of Standard Oil, and became a dominant supplier of petroleum products across Europe before merging into Esso.
