Iconic and unusually well-planned sideboard from the Øresund series, designed by Børge Mogensen for Karl Andersson & Söner. The series was designed in 1955 and is an excellent example of Mogensen's ability to combine strict form with well-thought-out function.
The sideboard's neat proportions make it easy to place in the living room and dining room as well as the hallway or study. The two sliding doors open with round, integrated handles. Since the doors run along the front of the furniture, they take up no extra space in the room when the cabinet is opened.
Behind the doors is an unusually practical interior with several shallow, removable drawers. The top drawers have divisions that are perfect for cutlery, small items and other items that you want to keep organized. All drawers can be easily moved between different levels. By placing the guides in the different holes in the cabinet, the interior can be completely adapted to what is to be stored.
The dark, round and slightly slanted legs give the furniture an elegant and airy expression. The round handles are in the same dark tone as the legs and create a beautiful whole against the warm color and vibrant grain of the teak.
Børge Mogensen was a trained cabinetmaker before becoming one of the most important designers of the Danish Modern movement. He advocated what is usually called democratic design: honest, functional furniture created to be used in everyday life and last for generations. Øresund shows this unusually clearly – behind the calm and stripped-down exterior is an interior that can be changed according to the user's needs.
The sideboard is labeled by AB Karl Andersson & Söner.
