Solid Pine 1980s St Michael 5 Drawer Tallboy - In Exceptional Condition
Meet this rather fabulous piece of 1980s pine furniture — a super-solid, beautifully made St Michael tallboy, complete with its original St Michael label from the days when Marks & Spencer was quietly producing some seriously good-quality furniture.
Crafted from substantial solid pine, this is a proper piece of furniture: very heavy, incredibly sturdy and built to last. The natural pine has a wonderfully warm, honeyed tone, with masses of character in the grain — from sweeping knots and figuring to those lovely natural variations that make solid timber so much more interesting than anything mass-produced today. We particularly love the way the grain runs across each of the five generous drawers.
The five drawers are fronted with beautifully shaped panels and finished with original turned wooden knob handles. The knobs have a lovely ribbed, concentric texture which adds a little extra detail and gives the piece its unmistakable 1980s country-house charm.
And then there are those four chunky turned bun feet, giving the tallboy a pleasingly elevated stance and a touch of traditional furniture-making character. The softly rounded top and moulded detailing around the drawers and base add to its wonderfully tactile appearance.
It has been professionally cleaned and lovingly waxed, bringing out the gorgeous natural colour and grain of the pine. It is now in immaculate condition and looking particularly handsome.
with its combination of quality construction, beautiful natural timber and original St Michael provenance, this is far removed from the lightweight pine furniture we often associate with the 1980s. It is a substantial, practical and genuinely characterful piece with plenty of storage without taking up an enormous amount of floor space.
A lovely choice for a bedroom, guest room, dressing area or even a stylish hallway — and equally at home amongst contemporary, country or vintage interiors.
