This finely crafted diminutive commode was made as a demonstration piece by an apprentice to showcase woodworking skills and craftsmanship during an apprenticeship.

The miniature chest features three smoothly operating drawers, a burl walnut and exotic wood construction, tapered legs, and the restrained, elegant proportions characteristic of the Directoire style. The drawers display beautiful figured wood grain, while the contrasting ebony and exotic wood details add depth and visual interest.

A particularly intriguing feature is the French inscription/signature and dates found on the underside of the bottom drawer. The piece is dated 1837, with a second date of September 12, 1908, which may indicate a later gifting or ownership event.
