Originating from the mountainous tōhoku region in northern japan, these sculptures with their refined design embody the quintessence of the mingei folk art movement.

their presence here is remarkable due to their monumental size (over 60 cm tall), a rare size for this type of handcrafted piece, making them true decorative objects for interiors or architectural collections.

each piece is signed or stamped on its base by the master woodturner who crafted it.

details of the set (from left to right):

1. Yajirō-style kokeshi (h. 60 cm): this model is distinguished by the use of a wood species with a very graphic and pronounced natural grain. The cylindrical body is decorated with stylized camellia (tsubaki) motifs hand-painted with green and red pigments, framed by characteristic concentric lines. Calligraphic signature under the base.

2. Naruko-style kokeshi (h. 61 cm): featuring the creamy hue of traditional wood, this piece has a voluminous head assembled using traditional techniques and an elegantly curved silhouette. The painted floral decoration is complemented by broad bands of red pigment at the shoulders and base. Craftsman's mark under the base.

3. Large, monumental tōgatta-style kokeshi (h. 62 cm): the centerpiece of the lot due to its imposing presence, it features a powerful graphic representation of a large, radiant chrysanthemum painted with broad strokes. On the reverse, the base features a long calligraphic inscription indicating that it received the japanese ministry of labor award, a highly prestigious official distinction recognizing the high quality and craftsmanship of the artisan.

in excellent overall condition for pieces of this size and period. The wood is sound, heavy, and stable.
the original colors and pigments have retained their warm hues, complemented by a superb natural patina. Minor marks, small superficial scratches, and slight discoloration consistent with age and authenticity are entirely in keeping with the piece's age and authenticity. See less
