Highly collectible, complete double issue of the legendary avant-garde art magazine Verve (Nos. 5-6), published in 1939 for the New York World's Fair.
This issue is famous for its massive "220 Portraits" gallery, tracking the history of human portraiture from the 11th to the 20th century.
Master Artists Inside: Features original lithographs by Henri Matisse, Georges Braque, Paul Klee, Fernand Léger, Georges Rouault, Pierre Bonnard, André Derain, and Constantin Guys.
Cover Wrapper features the original iconic gold cover wrapper illustrated with two embracing nudes by Aristide Maillol.
Rarity Note (Complete Set): This listing includes the rare original cardboard slipcase protective jacket, which is missing from the vast majority of surviving copies on the market.
Excellent used vintage condition. 100% Complete, this volume is entirely complete and has NOT been broken up for prints. Lithographs Intact and includes all 14 original, brilliant color and black-and-white lithographs printed by the legendary Mourlot Frères studio in Paris. Outer Slipcase Box shows age-appropriate wear, including edge curling, minor rips, and split corners (see photos). However, it remains structurally intact and serves as a highly rare, complete protective jacket. Inner Book & Binding inner gold Maillol volume is in excellent structural condition. The binding is completely firm and fully attached with only minor nicks and surface scuffs to the wrapper edges. The inner pages are clean, crisp, and 100% complete. All 14 original Mourlot lithographs are present and in beautiful condition. Normal wear from use and age.
