A wonderfully dimensional vintage Balinese wood carving combining a fierce open-mouthed demon or guardian face with a smaller dragon head emerging in high relief above.
Hand carved from tropical wood, the piece features extensive pierced openwork, deeply modeled facial features and substantial undercut carving around the projecting dragon. A rich dark-brown finish allows the natural grain and variations in the wood to remain visible.
Its compact scale makes it particularly easy to incorporate into a collected gallery wall, while the depth of the carving gives it considerably more presence than its size might suggest.
Attributed to Bali, Indonesia, likely mid- to late 20th century.
