Dating approximately 1890–1915, the painted … Read more A wonderfully diminutive antique spice cabinet combining vernacular American craftsmanship with unusually elaborate interior construction.

Dating approximately 1890–1915, the painted cabinet contains ten fitted drawers arranged in two banks of five. Each wood-framed drawer incorporates a sheet-metal compartment and retains its individual hinged metal cover. Sheet-metal supports within the cabinet complete this remarkably intact storage system.

Applied classical-inspired molded decoration frames the cabinet at the cornice and plinth, giving this otherwise utilitarian piece the appearance of miniature furniture. The aged white-painted surface, small knob pulls and subtle irregularities of its handmade construction give it tremendous character.

One drawer incorporates reused lumber retaining large partial red stenciled lettering—an especially appealing glimpse into the economical vernacular construction of the period.

Estate sourced and most recently used for spices. No maker’s mark has been found.
