A handsome vintage equestrian print of the legendary American thoroughbred Jay Trump, after the 1965 portrait by Richard Stone Reeves (American, 1919–2005), the 20th century's foremost painter of champion racehorses. It is signed and dated "Richard Stone Reeves 1965" in the plate at lower right.
Beneath the image, an elegant calligraphic caption records the horse's pedigree and connections: "Jay Trump — Mr. Crompton Smith, Jr. Up. Bay Gelding, 1957, by Tonga Prince, out of Be Trump by *Bernborough. Owned by Mrs. Mary C. Stephenson, Trained by Mr. Fred Winter," beneath the owner's grey-and-gold cross silks, and "Winner Maryland Hunt Cup, 1963, 1964, The Grand National, Aintree, 1965."
In 1965 Jay Trump made history as the first American-bred, American-owned, and American-ridden horse to win the Grand National at Aintree, beating the favourite Freddie by three-quarters of a length — later a U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee (1971) and one of only two horses ever to win both the Maryland Hunt Cup and the Grand National. A wonderful piece of Anglo-American steeplechasing and sporting-art history, presented in a black-and-gilt frame with a wash-line mount.
Provenance & dating: From a Vermont estate. Retains the original paper dust cover, wire hanger, and the label of Boutilier's Custom Picture Framing, 217 College Street, Burlington, VT (est. 1925). The caption's record of wins stops at the 1965 Grand National — omitting Jay Trump's 1966 Maryland Hunt Cup — indicating the print was issued in 1965 and framed shortly after, perhaps 1966.
